When you decide to install a fire safety system on your premise, every bit counts. But, amongst all, one very critical gadget is the Hydrant Valve.

What is a hydrant valve?

The fire hydrant valve is a part of the fire hydrant system and is a crucial component in providing an efficient and effective means of extinguishing fires. The hydrant system allows firefighters to attack the source or seat of the fire from a distance, and hydrant valves are its outlets that deliver water with intense pressure, to drowse the fire.
It is a simple valve-like device, similar to normal taps that deliver water constantly as long as there is water at the source and as soon as you open it. These valves are attached to the fire hose by fire fighting personnel to throw pressurized water out to fight a fire.

How does it work?

When the position is turned 'open', the valve at the rear end or bottom of the dry barrel rises and plugs drain holes and thus permitting water to get filled in the barrel of the hydrant system. When kept 'closed', the valve lowers down to block the flow of water and re-open the drain holes at the rear end or bottom of the hydrant.

To ensure easy access for firefighting personnel in fighting a fire, valves are installed on the risers of a building. It happened to be a core part of the entire fire fighting system. The hose system works on these valves, as manually operated stop and open valves allowing the firefighters to completely control the system and in-turn the fire. In simple words, to activate a fire fighting system and the water flux, one needs to just turn the valve in the clockwise direction – 'OPEN'.

A fire hydrant system comprises pipe-work to carry water and hydrant valves that fire-fighters can connect to the hoses and shoot water onto the fire. These valves are very common and can be found in every place – large buildings, factories, industrial plants, off-shore platforms, and everywhere. The valves were designed robustly to handle the harsh environment and operate in extreme heat in fire situations. Some of these valves may also have regulators to control the flow of water out.

In case of fire, rapid action is expected by fire rescue personnel. For rescue workers, proper and quality fire safety equipment can ensure that emergency rescue would be conducted properly and quickly. Equipment like the fire hydrant valve makes it a lot easier for rescue operations to be conducted smoothly and effectively, thus making rescue operations much more fruitful and saving lives and damages.

Hydrant Valves are efficient in fighting large fires. They allow firefighters to extinguish the fire from a distance. The pressure of hydrant valves in large industrial complexes might range around 10-11 kg/cm2 while in small buildings it might range around 4-5 kg/cm2. Hydrant valve is made of SS 304 grade Steel.
